Camping, books, etc.

Marcus, the dogs, and I spent a lovely weekend on Pilot Mountain with some good Roanoke friends, almost the same group we went to the beach with. Pilot Mountain is only half an hour north of here and it was almost the perfect weekend to see the fall colors (this next weekend will be the perfect one). It was one of the most poorly planned camping trips on our part but it all turned out, in part because of the Food Lion only 15 minutes away. The pups did really well. Jackson loved tramping through the woods and after our four mile hike to the summit and back, Addie was pleasantly tired and slept in my lap most of the night. They stayed in one crate together that we covered with blankets and “connected” to our tent by partially putting the rain fly over them so we could see them through the mesh in our tent. I’m afraid I didn’t take any pictures (shame on me!) but I will post some from Julie or Dan.

Dan was unfortunately not able to come back to Winston with us for brunch but Julie, Q, Shaun and we ate at First Street Draught House before they all headed back to Roanoke. It was such a lovely weekend with such a great group of people. We are planning a winter trip to a condo at Massenutten in February which will involve lots of tea, sweets, fires, snow, and probably even more beer.

I returned to a couple of books I had bought last week that I’m really excited about. “The Handmade Marketplace” by Kari Chapin is about everything involved in selling your handmade goods. I think it will be really helpful and I’ve already dove into it. “Color Your Cloth” by Malka Dubrawsky is about dyeing your own fabric using wax resist, something I dabbled in years ago and look forward to trying again soon. I think our mudroom will make for the perfect place to dye.

The next Chaos Cooking event in the middle of November is going to be held at our house! Remember hearing about the last one? Well, now we’ll be fitting that many people in our tiny kitchen and a house with very little furniture! It will be an adventure. We’re doing brunch for dinner and I think I know what I’m doing and it’s all going to be awesome.

I also realize that my last post said I’d have a project to reveal to you on Saturday and while I didn’t lie, I didn’t realize at the time that I had my days all mixed up and the project will be finished this Friday. I’ve made some progress and I’m pretty sure I can make it happen!
