Works in Progress

The Undertoad.

I have never been very good at naming quilts so I usually don’t try.  But while working on this half square triangle quilt that’s inspired by the ocean, it came to me: the Undertoad.  It refers to the story of “The World According to Garp”and his misunderstanding as a child of the term “undertow”.  I used 8 shades of Kona cotton and 2 Moda crossweaves in various shades of blue and green and this commission is already one of my favorite quilts to date.

What’s left:

  • piecing/trimming HSTs
  • piecing top together
  • piecing back
  • long arm quilting
  • binding, labeling
  • gifting!

Due: 20 March 2012

Baby quilt for friends.

Some friends are having a baby this spring so my friend Ashley and I are making them a quilt.  I am using it as a teaching quilt for Ashley and it’s inspired by this and this quilt from Handmade by Alissa.

What’s left:

  • piecing blocks into background
  • piecing back
  • quilting
  • binding, labeling
  • gifting

Due: 17 March 2012

Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt.

Based on the book Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt book by Laurie Aaron Hird, I’m joining along with the so many lovely ladies in working through this book over about a year’s time.  I am using my scrap bin fabrics so this quilt is sure to be eccentric!  I am paper piecing most of the 6″ finished blocks, unless another way makes more sense to me.

Swoon.

This quilt is so much more work than I was expecting!  It didn’t help that I cut out enough fabric for two entire quilts made of the same fabric.  I’m using Jay McCarroll’s Habitat line that we got through the Triangle Modern Quilt Guild, coordinating solids, and a couple different neutrals for the background.  I can’t wait for this/these to be finished!

What’s left:

  • 6 more blocks, piecing top
  • piecing the back
  • basting
  • long arm quilting
  • binding, labeling

T-Shirt quilt for Holly.

A commission for my friend out of her old band t shirts.

What’s Left:

  • Cutting shirts to manageable sizes
  • Piecing the front
  • Piecing the back
  • Basting, quilting
  • Binding, labeling, send off

Black White & Red Monster

I started this quilt years ago as well but didn’t feel like I had enough variety of fabric so I set it aside until finally finishing the piecing in November 2009, with approximately 40 different prints. The back is made and the beast is three quarters quilted. However, I don’t like the thread I chose to quilt it with (I was having a ton of tension problems) and my stitches are terribly uneven so I have begun the long process of picking it out and plan to long arm quilt it soon.

What’s left:

  • removal of the current quilting
  • re-quilting on the long arm
  • binding

Hexagon Scrap Quilt

I have been working on this since April 2010 and it’s a work in slow progress. I have done a bit of updating along the way, with long periods of no progress.  I began this quilt knowing it would be at least a five year process.

What’s left:
  • paper piecing hundreds more hexagons
  • backing (to piece or not to piece?)
  • hand quilting
  • binding

A Valley of Hopeful Boys

I made a girl version of this quilt in February 2011, start to finish in five days. This one has taken a good bit longer… I ran out of grey fabric and while I thought it was Kona coal, it apparently is not so I have to figure out way to incorporate a different shade of grey without ruining the effect of squares behind squares.

What’s left:
  • piecing
  • backing
  • basting
  • quilting
  • binding

Single Girl, queen sized

This quilt is for me, using an assortment of Denyse Schmidt fabrics. The background will be a gunmetal grey (Freespirit in Manatee to be exact) and I’m really excited about it.

What’s left:
  • tracing and cutting out background
  • piecing the curves
  • piecing the back
  • basting
  • hand quilting (3 sections done, 13 to go!)
  • binding

Suits and Ties

This is a commission I first received a long time ago, longer than I’d care to admit. It’s been a daunting project, a queen sized quilt made from suits and ties and other scrap fabric in the style of Gee’s Bend. I have the plan drawn up and about half the log cabin blocks started.

What’s left:
  • lots of piecing
  • backing
  • long arm quilting
  • binding
  • labeling
  • send off!

Selvage spiderweb

I have been working on this since August 2010 and it will be worth all the time I’ve put into it.  Thanks to Lindsay and my aunt Lois for donating to my selvage collection!  I have half the blocks pieced (8 triangle sections each) and all the linen kites cut.

What’s left:
  • piecing
  • backing
  • long arm quilting
  • binding

Hexagonal Christmas Tree Skirt

I made a tree skirt for Christmas 2009 and was so happy with it but upon putting it on the tree, realized how very small it was.  So that one will be for the smaller tree and the new one (which I started summer 2010) will be for the bigger one (I told Marcus since we have two fireplaces, we have to have two Christmas trees :)

What’s left:
  • piecing top together
  • backing
  • basting
  • quilting
  • binding

Ring of Fire

This was one of the first quilts I made (8 years ago) but I didn’t really know what I was doing.  I tried quilting it with a super high loft batting but my machine was not having it, so I stuck it away.  I recently dug it out, cut the blocks apart, and I think I’m going to sew them back together with seams that actually match up, though it might get scrapped all together.  I’ll keep it as  WIP until I decide.

What’s left:
  • re-joining blocks
  • piecing back
  • long arm quilting
  • binding
